Abstract
By breaking the orthogonality of subcarriers, spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM), a multicarrier signal waveform, surpasses traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in spectral efficiency. This article provides an overview of the research that has been conducted on SEFDM since 2015. It covers the ideas and foundations, applications in wireless and optical communications, circuit design, and experimental test beds. UCL as well as other academic institutions and research facilities throughout the world have completed this work. With an emphasis on signal production, detection, and channel estimation, we pinpoint methods to enhance SEFDM performance and usefulness. In terms of spectrum efficiency, peak-to-average ratio (PAR) reduction, and other characteristics, this system is among the contemporary technologies that perform better than the OFDM system. This technology has advanced significantly and quickly in recent years, and its application in a variety of domains, including optical communications and the Internet of Things, has made it suitable for usage in 5G NR networks and beyond.
